Week 4

Barcodes

The past few weeks we have been researching the type of coding system we will use to reader information from the identity card. We have decided to use a 2D bar code.

Bar code types that were considered to be used include:
The most efficient code to be used for the projects scope was the QR code. This code was developed by the Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994, and stands for "Quick Response".

Using this system we are able to encode information in a matrix code that can be swiftly reader by a QR reader. In this case we have installed specific QR Code reader software on a mobile system with a camera. we have tested the reader and it has responded very rapidly. This is also an advantage due to the fact that this type of code can be read rapidly using a device with a normal camera and the appropriate software.

The below code has been generated using KAYWA QR code generator to test the coding system.

Test QR code generated

Information embedded on the bar code:
  • test test
  • Name: Christos Erotokritou
  • D.O.B: 14.11.1985
  • Electronic identities project test QR bar code.

This code was later reader using the mobile phone and was correct.

Furthermore, This bar code type can also hold an image inside. this could be combined to show a portrait picture of the owner as well as hold personal information about him. Further research is currently being conducted regarding this system and how it will be finally implemented.

Below are a sample of how the bar code may look like

In the following weeks we will be working on setting up the SQL database system on a server. Prior to this we have to set up the server hardware and software and undertake a few testing procedures.
